The hardest part of writing is getting started! Maybe that’s why picture prompts are such an effective tool for getting kids involved in their writing assignments. Students can think about what they see in the picture, and that can lead to ideas of what to say about it. It starts the “behind-the-scenes” process of deciding just what to write about their topic. That’s why I like to use pictures with interesting details or pictures that leave unanswered questions. Photos, artwork in picture books, and news photos all work well as visual prompts.
