Spiral review is not one of those educational trends that inevitably comes storming through our classroom, just to disappear and be replaced by something new.  Whether you are using it for math, reading, or grammar, spiral review is a tried and true method for aiding students in mastering and retaining what they’ve learned.  It may seem like magic, but it isn’t.  Grammar spiral review is simply a way of “spiraling” (rotating) through language standards so that students are consistently practicing the concepts they need to know. That’s it.

If you’ve read my blog post “Spiral Math Homework to Reinforce the Standards“, you know I am a HUGE believer in spiral review in math!  However, if this method works so well for math, why not grammar?  Well, I took some time, tested a few ideas, and came up with a low-stress way of spiraling grammar standards. (check out the end of this post to see how I applied this to reading as well)

How Does it Work?

• Students get a one-page spiral review sheet each week.
• They focus on one column of questions each day (only 5-8 questions per day).
• Questions review all grammar and word study standards students have previously learned.
• The bottom row focuses on the most recently taught skill.
• As the year progresses, new standards are added at the bottom and concepts move up.
• Each day, we quickly check the questions from the day (or the day before if using as homework).
• On Friday, I give a mini spiral assessment that assesses the standards reviewed that week.

• I am guaranteed to get in grammar review every single day (we all know grammar can get pushed back in a busy schedule)
