
The first year I taught 5th grade math, I did what I was told to do. Teach the unit, test the unit, move on. And every time we started something new, I’d discover my students had quietly dumped everything from the unit before.
We’d spend three weeks on fractions. They’d nail the test. Six weeks later I’d put a fraction problem on the board and get blank stares from kids who had earned a 94 on that test.
I thought it was a memory problem. It wasn’t. It was a schedule problem.
What Is Spiral Review?
Spiral review is the practice of revisiting previously taught skills in small amounts, repeatedly, over a long stretch of time, instead of reviewing a topic once and moving on.
In a math classroom, it usually looks like a short daily assignment with four or five problems pulled from different standards. One fractions problem, one measurement problem, one from the unit you’re teaching right now, one from something you taught back in September. Ten minutes, and then you’re on with your day.
The point isn’t to teach anything new. Every skill on a spiral review sheet is something students have already been taught. The sheet exists to make them pull it back out of memory before they lose it.
Spiral Review Is Not the Same as a Spiral Curriculum
I want to clear this up early, because it’s the reason some teachers hear “spiral” and immediately tense up.
A spiral curriculum introduces a topic briefly, moves on before students have mastered it, and returns to it more deeply next month or next year. That approach has been criticized for years, and the criticism is fair. Students end up with shallow exposure to a lot of things and solid command of very little. If you taught through the era of “mile wide, inch deep” math programs, this is what burned you.
Spiral review is different in one important way. You still teach a unit all the way to mastery. You don’t cut fractions short. What spiral review changes is what happens after the unit ends, when a skill would normally go untouched for four months.
Teach deep. Then review wide. Those aren’t competing ideas, and confusing the two has cost a lot of teachers a strategy that would have helped them.
Why Spiral Review Works
I used spiral review for years before I understood why it worked. It turns out it combines several of the best-supported findings in learning research.
1. The spacing effect
Practice spread out over time produces far better long-term retention than the same amount of practice crammed together. This is one of the oldest findings in psychology, going back to Hermann Ebbinghaus in the 1880s, and it has held up through more than a century of replication.
The catch is that massed practice feels more effective while you’re doing it. Twenty fraction problems in a row feels productive. Students get fluent, they get confident, and everyone walks away thinking it stuck. Then it evaporates. Spaced practice feels harder and worse in the moment and works dramatically better later, which is exactly why it’s so easy to abandon.
2. Retrieval practice
Pulling information out of memory strengthens it more than putting it back in. Re-reading notes or watching me rework a problem on the board is passive. Being handed a problem cold and having to dig up the method yourself is what builds durable memory.
A spiral review sheet is a small retrieval test, every day, with no stakes attached.
3. Interleaving
This is the one most teachers haven’t heard of, and I think it’s the most interesting.
When students practice one problem type at a time, they never have to figure out which strategy to use. It’s a fractions worksheet, so they obviously use the fraction method. The hardest part of the problem has been done for them by the title at the top of the page.
Mix the problem types together and suddenly students have to identify what kind of problem they’re looking at before they can solve it. That identification step is what most standardized tests actually measure, and it’s the step that blocked practice never trains. Researchers, including Doug Rohrer, have tested this specifically in middle school math, and interleaved practice consistently beats blocked practice on delayed tests, even though students perform worse during practice.
A well-built spiral review sheet is interleaved by design. That’s not a side benefit. That’s the main event.
Worth knowing
In 2013, a team led by John Dunlosky reviewed ten common study techniques and rated them by how strongly the evidence supported them. Only two earned the top rating: distributed practice and practice testing. Spiral review is both at once, which is a large part of why it works as well as it does.

How to Fit Spiral Review Into Your Day
There’s no single right slot. I’ve used all four of these, and they trade off differently.
Morning work
My favorite. Students walk in, sit down, and start without being told. It buys you ten minutes for attendance, lunch count, and reading the room while everyone is productively occupied. The routine itself is worth as much as the math.
The downside is that morning work gets eaten by assemblies, fire drills, and picture day. Build in some tolerance for missed days.
Homework
This is where I landed most years. Spiral review makes excellent homework because students can genuinely do it independently. Nothing on the page is new, so nobody is stuck at the kitchen table at 8pm trying to learn a concept from scratch, and no parent has to teach a method they don’t know.
Completion rates go up when homework is predictable and doable. That was the biggest change I saw.

Math warm-up
Good if your schedule is tight and mornings aren’t yours. It puts students in a math frame of mind before the lesson starts. The risk is that it bleeds into lesson time, so use a timer and mean it.
Math center or early finisher work
Works well as a secondary slot, but I wouldn’t rely on it as your only one. The students who most need spiral review are rarely the early finishers.
How to Actually Use the Data
This is the part teachers skip, and it’s where most of the value is hiding.
A spiral review sheet is a daily diagnostic. Every morning you get a small, low-stakes read on which standards are holding and which are slipping, across your whole class, for free.
Here’s what I did with it:
- Scan, don’t grade. I walked the room while students worked and looked at one problem, whichever standard I was most worried about. Thirty seconds, and I knew who needed me.
- Pull a small group that same day. If four kids missed the same problem, that’s a five-minute reteach at the back table, not a whole-class lesson.
- Use the weekly quiz for grades, not the daily work. Daily spiral review should be safe to be wrong on. The moment students think it’s graded for accuracy, they start guessing to look good instead of showing you what they actually know, and you’ve lost the diagnostic value.
- Track it over time. A skill still being missed in February after being taught in October isn’t a memory problem. It never got learned in the first place, and that’s a different fix.
Common Spiral Review Mistakes
- Using it to introduce new content. If a skill hasn’t been taught yet, it doesn’t belong on a spiral sheet. Students can’t retrieve something they never stored, and all you’ve done is teach them the page is impossible.
- Making it too long. Four or five problems. If it’s taking more than ten to fifteen minutes, it has stopped being review and started being an assignment. Long sheets are the number one reason teachers quit spiral review in October.
- Grading daily work for accuracy. See above. Grade completion, or grade the weekly quiz.
- Collecting it and never looking at it. If you aren’t reading it, you’ve turned a diagnostic tool into busy work, and students figure that out faster than you’d like.
- Quitting in week three. Spiral review doesn’t show results in week three. It shows results in February, when you realize you haven’t had to reteach place value all year. Everything about the early weeks feels like it isn’t working, and that feeling is the spacing effect doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.
- Dropping it during test prep season. This one always got me. Teachers cut spiral review in March to make room for test prep, which is like canceling your training runs to make room for the race.
How to Start Spiral Review in Your Classroom
If you’re starting from scratch, don’t overbuild it.
Week 1. Pick your slot and use it every single day. A handful of problems, all from skills you’ve already taught. Don’t grade anything yet. You’re establishing a routine, and that’s the whole job this week.
Week 2. Add the scan. Pick one problem each day and check it while students work. Start noticing patterns.
Week 3. Add a short weekly quiz covering the skills that appeared that week. That becomes your grade and your real data point.
Week 4 and on. Start pulling small groups based on what you’re seeing. This is where it stops being a worksheet and starts being an instructional system.
Expect it to feel unremarkable for the first month. It’s supposed to.
